Tan Kheng Hua is a celebrated award-winning actress and producer known across Singapore and Malaysia. She has appeared in productions such as NBC's The Philanthropist, UFA's The Patriarch, and HBO Asia's original series Serangoon Road. Her recent portrayal of the "Empress Dowager" in Netflix's Marco Polo attracted widespread viewer attention.
In film, she featured in the adaptation of Singapore-born Kevin Kwan's bestselling novel Crazy Rich Asians (2018), playing Kerry Chu, the mother of protagonist Rachel Chu, portrayed by Constance Wu. Beyond film and television, Kheng Hua holds a strong reputation in Singapore's theatre community as a prolific actress and independent creative producer. She develops and produces diverse stage and television content spanning cabaret, drama, comedy, dramedy, musicals, and more. One notable TV drama she created and produced, Do Not Disturb, was the first local English-language series to earn a 5-star rating from Singapore's leading newspaper, The Straits Times. She has also produced festivals including The SIN-PEN Colony at Penang’s Georgetown Festival and The 20-Something Festival in Singapore.
Tan Kheng Hua began her career in corporate marketing after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University Bloomington. Acting was not initially a focus during her youth until she enrolled in a theatrical arts course while studying in the United States, which sparked her passion for the craft. Upon returning to Singapore, she balanced a marketing job with acting on the side. Her stage debut was in John Bowen's The Waiting Room, directed by her cousin Ivan Heng. It took nearly ten years before she committed to acting full-time.
She was selected as one of 20 contemporary Singaporean artists representing the country in the Singapore: Inside Out exhibitions held in New York City, London, and Beijing. Kheng Hua has received numerous accolades, including The Art Nation Award (Best Actress), DBS Life! Theatre Award (Best Actress), Asian Television Awards for Best Comedic and Dramatic Performances by an Actress, Star Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress, Asian Television Award for Best Current Affairs & Magazine Presenter, JCCI Singapore Foundation Culture Awards for Contributions to Singapore, and the Critics Choice Award (Best Actor) at the Cairo International Festival of Experimental Theatre. Outside her career, Kheng is a cat lover and sports enthusiast, and mother to her daughter Shi-An. She has competed in canoeing, gymnastics, and track events, is a certified yoga instructor, and enjoys running, jump roping, diving, and skiing.
