A Chicago native, he began his producing career on the NBC series Midnight Caller, starring Gary Cole. He then worked as a Co-Producer on the acclaimed NBC drama Reasonable Doubts, featuring Mark Harmon and Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin.
From 1993, Michaels served as Co-Producer for three seasons on ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, starring Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher.
Other producing credits include Charlie Grace, an ABC detective drama starring Mark Harmon as a private investigator raising a 12-year-old LeeLee Sobieski, and Escape From Atlantis, a two-hour cable movie for Starz/Encore.
Michaels’ subsequent projects included the CBS series Turks, starring William Devane, and Cover Me: Based on the True Life of an FBI Family for the USA Network. He later produced The Guardian pilot for CBS, Odyssey 5 for Showtime, followed by Dr. Vegas for CBS.
He produced the Golden Globe-nominated series Everybody Hates Chris, inspired by Chris Rock, which set the record as the highest-rated comedy ever on the UPN/CW network.
After Everybody Hates Chris concluded after 88 episodes, Michaels joined the producing team of Supernatural at Warner Bros. Television at the start of season 5 and remained through the series’ final season, number 15.
Alongside Sean Astin and Mark Marshall, Jim recently completed the documentary Remember the Sultana, funded by over 930 Kickstarter supporters, about America’s largest maritime disaster.
Jim has been a featured keynote speaker nationwide for organizations such as the AFCI and universities including UCLA, Academy of Art University, and NYU. He is a longtime member of the Producers Guild of America (PGA), the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmys), SAG-AFTRA, and the Directors Guild of America (DGA).
His productions have been filmed across 10 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces: Illinois, Hawaii, California, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, Utah, Ontario, and British Columbia.
