James Douglas Shuffield was born on October 12, 1972, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the esteemed James F. Shuffield and the lovely Kathryn Shuffield. Nicknamed Doug, he was the long-awaited son and third child, joining his sisters Beverly and Valerie. At the age of 14, Doug experienced a spiritual rebirth by committing his life to Jesus Christ, embarking on a lifelong journey as a devoted follower.
Displaying an early talent for computers and electronics, Doug pursued Electrical Engineering at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. In the summer of 1994, during his junior year, he married his high school sweetheart, Shawn Nutt. He completed his studies and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1995.
Following graduation, Doug relocated to Austin, Texas, to start his career as an electrical engineer. He has lived and worked there since 1996 and currently serves as the Director of Engineering at the emerging virtual reality company, Virtuix.
Doug and Shawn have three children—Meagan, Molly, and Joshua—and their family is rounded out by their loyal dog, Jack Bow-wow, named after Jack Bauer from the television series 24.
Doug’s acting journey began in the summer of 2013 when his daughter Meagan encouraged him to audition as an extra for NBC's show Revolution, which was filming its second season in Austin. Selected to play a Patriot, Doug appeared in several episodes starting August 5, 2013.
In August 2015, Doug earned his first principal speaking role as the Eagles Head Coach opposite Timothy Hutton on the Emmy Award-winning ABC series American Crime. Originally cast as an extra, director John Ridley elevated him to a principal role to deliver dialogue during a scene in the visiting team’s huddle. This role granted Doug eligibility for SAG-AFTRA membership.
Doug continues to pursue acting, taking on as many roles as possible while preparing for his breakthrough opportunity. In the meantime, he maintains his engineering career.
