Nick Harvey, born Nicholas Stuart Harvey on August 17, 1955, in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia, was the son of a French pastry chef and baker of Cornish descent who had traveled to Australia to work in the gold mines at Hill End, NSW. His mother was born on a sheep farm at Hill End. After his parents separated when he was three, Nick lived with his grandparents on the farm where his mother was raised, sparking his passion for nature, hunting, and fishing. Both grandparents were musically gifted, playing instruments like the piano, ukulele, and fiddle, and singing. In an era before television and with short-lasting wireless batteries, Nick spent his evenings reading, singing, and learning guitar. Weekly, the family gathered around the wireless to listen to the Country music hour featuring Australian and American artists.
Nick attended several primary schools before enrolling at Echuca Technical College in Victoria, where his mother had remarried. However, at 14 and a half, fed up with school—where he was often mugged for his lunch money and belongings—he ran away and found work as a roustabout in sheep shearing sheds, adding boxing, drinking, and pursuing women to his experiences.
After a legal issue stemming from a fight, Nick served in the Australian Army and completed a tour in Vietnam. Later, he moved to London and, as he put it, "put on the greatest act and told the biggest lies ever told to get into RADA.
