Nely Galán, born Arnely Alvarez in Santa Clara, Cuba, took the last name Galán from her first husband, whom she divorced at a young age. Her family relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey, in 1965 when she was two years old, making it her home. While in high school, Nely submitted an article to Seventeen magazine that impressed the editors so much she was invited to be a guest editor, eventually securing a permanent role. By the age of 22, she became the youngest radio station manager in the United States, overseeing the Spanish-language WNJU channel 47. Later, during her tenure at Time Warner and HBO, she co-founded Tropix, a production company aimed at showcasing Latino actors. In 1994, Nely established GaLAn Entertainment, where she serves as president and CEO. Based in Venice, California, GaLAn specializes in producing and marketing prime-time "crossover" Latino programming. By 1999, at just 36 years old, she was named President of Entertainment for Telemundo, the international Spanish-language network. Her notable achievements include producing the early '90s comedy specials "Loco Slam," the "Bravo Awards" honoring Latino entertainment accomplishments, and helping launch the Fox Latin American Channel, Fox Kids Network in Latin America, and Fox Sports Américas.
Nely was recently awarded the National Hispanic Leadership Fellowship from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She and Paul Rodriguez have a son named Lucas, born in 2000. Their breakup inspired Nely to create The Swan (2004), a show designed to boost her spirits and offer women access to cosmetic surgery and complete makeovers—opportunities usually reserved for wealthy actresses and models.
