Dennis' filmmaking journey began in 1971 when his brother Gary gifted him a Nikon F camera, leading to an intimate portrait of his family's Christmas. Gary transformed those photos into a short feature that aired on KERA's Newsroom with Jim Lehrer. Captivated, Dennis closed his foreign car repair shop to work with documentary filmmaker Jim Murray, learning the fundamentals of filmmaking. A native Texan, Dennis launched his professional film career in 1972, creating videos and multi-image presentations for local and national corporate and nonprofit clients such as Shell Oil, City of Dallas-Support of the Arts, Texas Instruments, American Heart Association, and Adopt-A Monument-Dallas. He also produced educational videos for Holt, Rinehart & Winston, interviewing figures like Charlton Heston and Ray Bradbury. Dennis managed a company specializing in cutting-edge multi-image entertainment projects, including the original Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, during Dallas' production boom, Dennis advanced rapidly. Serving as Unit Manager, Producer, Line Producer, and Production Executive, he oversaw numerous commercially successful and award-winning feature films and television productions, including Warner Bros.' Local Hero, Horton Foote's Academy Award-winning The Trip to Bountiful, Universal Pictures' blockbuster The Fast and the Furious, and Showtime's acclaimed TV pilot Dexter. As HBO's Vice President of Production, he contributed to the network's unprecedented Emmy success, overseeing 27 films that won 51 major awards, including 18 Emmys for titles like And the Band Played On and The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dennis has worked to enhance and support the moving image industry. Whether advocating in Los Angeles for projects to be filmed in Texas, acting as a liaison for producers interested in shooting in Texas, or connecting Texas filmmakers with LA contacts, he has consistently sought to give back to the state and community that helped shape his career. Within Texas, Dennis has volunteered his time and expertise on various boards and commissions, supporting the Texas independent film community through involvement with organizations such as the Dallas Producers Association, Texas Association of Film Tape Professionals, Texas Motion Picture Alliance, and SWAMP. He has served as a juror, panelist, and advisor for numerous local filmmakers and film festivals, directed the Lone Star Film Festival for several years, and is currently the Founding and Senior Consultant of the environmental film festival EarthxFilm.
Dennis has also contributed as a resource advisor for the Sundance Institute and participated as a moderator or panelist at The Actors Studio in New York City, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Austin Film Festival, Oak Cliff Film Festival, and Dallas International Film Festival, among others. As the film industry evolved and incentives became crucial to production in the late 1980s, Dennis championed incentive legislation, recognizing incentives as vital to sustaining a vibrant film community. He co-founded ECO-USA and worked with the Directors Guild and Producers Guild to bring film productions back to the United States, California, and particularly Texas.
Giving back to the film community, especially in Texas, has been a central priority for Dennis. As an educator, he has served as an adjunct professor at USC School of Cinematic Arts and as a guest lecturer and mentor at SMU, UT Arlington, the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 2009, he created and chaired the Associate of Applied Arts Degree Program in Motion Picture Production at KD Conservatory in Dallas. Upon his retirement in February 2019, he was honored with the title of Chair Emeritus.
In retirement, Dennis continues to consult with KD Conservatory and serves as Co-Founder and Senior Consultant at EarthxFilm. He is Consulting Producer at M3Films and remains active as a Producer on documentary films including Pure Ecstasy: The Starck Club, exploring the iconic Starck Club and the 1980s, and Remaining Human, which examines Norbert Wiener and the ethical history of artificial intelligence.
