Yves Lavandier was born on April 2, 1959, and is married with four children. After earning a degree in civil engineering, he studied film at Columbia University in New York from 1983 to 1985. His instructors included Miloš Forman, František Daniel, Stefan Sharff, Brad Dourif, Larry Engel, and Milena Jelínek. During this period, he wrote and directed several short films, such as Mr Brown? (1984), The Perverts (1985), and Yes Darling (1984). Returning to France in 1985, he directed another short, Le scorpion (1987), and began a career in scriptwriting, primarily for television. He created the English-teaching sitcom Cousin William (1992). Alongside his scriptwriting work, Lavandier started teaching screenwriting across Europe and published a seminal work on the topic in 1994 titled La dramaturgie (translated as Writing Drama), which is now regarded as a foundational text among European scriptwriters and playwrights. In August and September 2000, he wrote and directed his first feature film, Oui, mais... (2001), which was released in France on April 18, 2001, exploring themes of brief therapy, psychological games, and teenage sexuality.
