Balazs Simonyi (born 1980, Budapest) is a filmmaker shortlisted for the European Film Award. He holds a degree in Literature, Film, and Art Theory (Aesthetics) and is currently pursuing a PhD in Art Theory. Since 2002, he has worked as a director and producer. His films have been showcased at major festivals including Cannes, Cracow, Seattle, Clermont-Ferrand, and Seoul.
He has received multiple awards, such as the CamerImage Award, the Audience Award at the Asiana Film Festival, and the French Cinema Distributors' (GRAC) prize. His films have been broadcast widely across Europe, with his short films also airing in the USA and Japan. Additionally, he serves as an organizer and selector for the Budapest Short Film Festival (BuSho).
His grants and fellowships include the PJLF Three Rivers Residency for scriptwriting (2017), CineLink Sarajevo project development (2017), European Short Pitch: Work in Progress in Poznan (2017), EDN Docs in Thessaloniki (2015, 2017), Last Stop Trieste (2017), DOK Incubator documentary workshop (2016), Rough Cut Boutique Sarajevo (2016), EuroConnection in Clermont Ferrand (2015), Nipkow Programm in Berlin (2014), and the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart (2011, 2014, 2015).
