Jason Chaet is an acclaimed filmmaker, theatre director, producer, editor, and acting instructor based in New York City. He began his career at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, collaborating with Off-Broadway legend Curt Dempster. During his tenure there, he helped develop new works by numerous playwrights, including David Mamet and Arthur Miller, and acted as assistant director on Mamet’s acclaimed No One Will Be Immune: Five Pieces for Theater and Miller’s Elegy for a Lady. Additionally, he led the Artistic Director’s Lab at the Ensemble Studio Theatre summer conference for two seasons.
He created and directed Off the Page for HBO/USCAF and boasts an extensive list of theatre directing credits across NYC and nationwide. He also founded and served as artistic director of Stage One, an Off-Off Broadway company dedicated to producing new and lesser-known one-act plays.
Transitioning into independent film, Jason directed workshops in New York and Los Angeles before becoming a creative consultant on the award-winning indie film Kissing Jessica Stein, distributed by Fox Searchlight. His feature film Putzel, starring Jack Carpenter, Melanie Lynskey, Susie Essman, and John Pankow, garnered multiple awards, screened at over fifty international film festivals, and was distributed globally by Filmbuff.
His other film and television projects include Remember, produced with the Puerto Rican film commission, and the TV pilot Avenues. He also co-created, directed, produced, and edited the socio-political short web series Just Words.
Jason’s latest feature, Seneca, which he directed, co-wrote with longtime collaborator Armando Riesco, edited, and produced, premiered at the HBO NY Latino Film Festival in August 2019 at AMC 42nd Street in New York City, where it received a Special Jury Prize. The film went on to screen at numerous festivals nationwide, winning several awards, including the Ultra Indie Feature Prize at the Woodstock Film Festival and Best Picture and Best Director at the Phoenix Film Festival. Starring Armando Riesco, Susan Misner, Shirley Rumierk, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Tony Plana, Seneca was filmed on location in New York City and Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. It streamed exclusively on HBO and HBO Max for two years and is now available for rental or purchase across all major platforms.
Currently, Jason is developing feature films such as Meri Crismas (co-writer, producer, director), Sifu (director and story developer), and I Ruin Everything (co-writer and director).
He is a longstanding member of the acting faculty at AMDA (American Musical Dramatic Academy) in New York City, where he previously supervised First Semester Acting and currently serves as Chair of the Camera Division and Head of the Camera Program.
