Rune Bendixen is a writer and director with over 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry, working as a film director and producer, recording artist, record producer/remixer, transmedia producer, comic book writer, and TV creator. He made music history by releasing Scandinavia's first techno singles with his band The Overlords, which led to worldwide fame with over 3 million units sold, extensive international touring, and hit singles on Billboard, the UK charts, and across Europe. Together with his partner Christian Johansson (Scarlett Johansson's brother), Rune produced and remixed tracks for international artists such as Billy Idol, Tracy Lords, UK number one band Blue Pearl, Sven Väth (SNAP), Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode), and US and UK chart-topper Billy Miles.
Rune directed The Overlords' music videos, discovering a passion for storytelling. He collaborated with writer/producer Kit Carson (Paris, Texas; Texas Chainsaw Massacre) to write, produce, and direct the American action film Bullfighter for Scanbox/Universal, starring Willem Dafoe, Robert Rodriguez, Guillermo Del Toro, Jared Harris, and Donnie Wahlberg. Following Bullfighter, Variety named Rune Bendixen as one of the "10 Directors to Watch."
After four years in Los Angeles, he returned to Denmark to write, produce, and direct two box office hits: Rich Kids and the beloved children’s IP Bølle Bob, both for Disney. Bølle Bob has spawned two sequels, books, a musical, numerous records, and ranks among Scandinavia’s most popular children’s franchises alongside Pippi Longstocking, Emil, and the Brothers Lionheart.
Rune then transitioned to television, co-founding the TV production company BLU with Henrik Hancke and Per Zachariassen for Fremantle Media. BLU became Scandinavia’s market leader, producing shows such as Idol, X-Factor, and You Got Talent. Rune also achieved international success creating 20 TV formats, including acclaimed shows like Topmodel, Smid Tøjet for Red Cross, Elle Style Awards, and House Hunters.
In 2010, Aller Media—one of Europe’s largest print publishers with over 100 million monthly readers—headhunted Rune to lead their media innovation department and establish Aller Visuals, the company’s new TV and film division. Serving clients like Audi, Mercedes, Pandora, Toyota, and Elle Magazine, Aller Visuals produced over 2,500 commercials in under two years, becoming one of Scandinavia’s top commercial production companies.
As head of Aller Innovation, Rune developed brand extensions for 35 of Scandinavia’s most iconic print brands. He created digital products such as Royalista, CelebQuiz, and the US App Store’s number one game, WordFeud. In 2015, The Overlords signed a global record deal with Universal Records to digitize their extensive back catalog and release new remixes. Renowned artists like Vince Clarke, Youth, and Liquid Gold contributed remixes, which quickly topped Europe’s leading download platforms like Beatport and Juno Download.
That same year, Rune co-founded Gunpowder Studios, a transmedia production house, with longtime writing partner Jean Pierre Margo. Gunpowder Studios developed the critically acclaimed comic book series Agent 47: Birth of the Hitman, published worldwide by Dynamite Entertainment. The comic is based on the popular Hitman video game franchise.
