Argentine-born filmmaker and visual artist Javier Olivera began his artistic journey studying painting under Argentine artists Luis Felipe Noé and Eduardo Stupía. He later pursued film and video studies at UCLA in the United States and studied Iberoamerican literature at Fundación José Ortega y Gasset in Spain. In film, he co-wrote and directed The Visitant (El visitante) (1999), Mika My Spanish War (Mika, mi guerra de España) (2013), and The Shadow (La sombra) (2015). These films received critical acclaim and were showcased at international film festivals. In 2007, he released the TV movie Floresta on Argentina's Public Channel, adapted from a play by playwright and actor Rafael Spregelburd. Olivera has also directed several fiction series in Argentina, Spain, and the US. He has developed film projects and written scripts for production companies across Argentina, Spain, and the US. In the documentary realm, Olivera has directed series and videos for UNICEF, INAI (National Institute of Indigenous Affairs of Argentina), Encuentro, Bacua, Canal 7 (Argentina), and Telesur (Venezuela). He has served as a visiting instructor at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Currently, he teaches screenwriting and directing at Uruguay Film Campus and conducts workshops in Argentina and Spain. Since 1990, Javier has also developed a diverse body of work encompassing paintings, photographs, videos, and video installations, which have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both in Argentina and internationally.
