Michael Vale, an actor renowned for portraying Fred the Baker in Dunkin' Donuts commercials, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 28, 1922. He trained at New York City's Dramatic Workshop and had his film debut with a minor role in Fred Zinnemann's adaptation of Michael V. Gazzo's A Hatful of Rain (1957). Vale made his Broadway debut in January 1962 in "The Egg," supporting lead Michael Constantine; however, the play closed after only eight performances. After two more unsuccessful Broadway shows in 1964, he found success with "The Impossible Years," which opened on October 13, 1965, and ran until May 27, 1967, totaling 670 performances. Over the following decade, he appeared in four more Broadway productions, with Neil Simon's "California Suite," where he served as a standby, being the only hit.
Although Vale had limited impact in films, he featured in over 1,300 television commercials. His role as Fred in the Dunkin' Donuts ads, famous for the catchphrase "Time to make the doughnuts," aired from 1982 until his retirement in 1997.
Michael Vale passed away on December 24, 2005, in New York City due to complications from diabetes at the age of 83.
