Rebecca Thomson is a filmmaker based in Tasmania, living in nipaluna/Hobart with her husband, three children, chickens, bees, and an extensive costume collection. She has experience in all facets of filmmaking, including writing, producing, directing, shooting, editing, and distribution. Rebecca has created numerous films, such as the quirky genre shorts Cupcake: A Zombie Lesbian Musical, Slashed, and The Jelly Wrestler. These works have collectively screened at over seventy film festivals worldwide, including Frameline San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival, and New York City International Film Festival, earning many awards along the way. In 2019, she completed A Hairy Problem, a Screen Australia-funded film about female body hair, which has garnered nearly a million online views. Her short film I Am Undone was featured in the anthology A Night of Horror: Volume 1, produced by Deadhouse Pictures. Rebecca is a key filmmaker behind Women Of The Island, a multi-award-winning web series of short documentaries spotlighting the remarkable women of Tasmania. The series has drawn sold-out audiences across Tasmania during Ten Days On The Island 2019 and received official selections at numerous international festivals, winning the Grand Jury Prize at Berlin Web Fest 2019, Best Cinematography at LA Webfest, and Best Direction in a Documentary Series at Baltimore Webfest. In 2020, Rebecca collaborated on several music videos for songwriter Monique Brumby and recently completed There Is No I In Island, a beautiful animated documentary series reflecting the fears and hopes of the Tasmanian community during the Covid-19 lockdown. Currently, she is writing a web series of original fairy tales in development with creative producer Catherine Pettman. Rebecca also hosts Bec's Backyard Film Festival, a lively and informal event held in her own backyard.
