Recognizing she didn't quite fit into corporate America, Stephanie embraced her creative spirit and sought a meaningful outlet. In the early 1970s, she started taking acting workshops at the National Black Theatre and later at Double Image Theatre. In 1978, she auditioned for and was accepted into NYU School of the Arts, where she studied acting in their demanding Theatre Program—a deeply rewarding experience on many levels.
Stephanie identifies as a dramatic actress who loves exploring emotional depths, though she also enjoys being a bit of a ham.
Raised in the South Bronx, her early exposure to diverse cultures profoundly influenced how she channels her talents. Her plays, screenplays, and other projects often reflect cultural activism, aiming to combat ignorance, promote appreciation for diversity, and address various social issues. Watch for the relaunch of "tribalspirit," an offshoot of her anti-racism documentary and cultural educational products, along with upcoming stage, DVD, and film adaptations of her work.
In February 2012, she produced, acted in, and directed "Blood Makes The Red River Flow," a Creole historical drama presented as an AEA Showcase Production during Black History Month in NYC’s Theatre District. Later that year, amidst the chaos of Hurricane Sandy, she directed and produced a limited Off-Broadway run of her supernatural mystery/thriller "A Wound In Time." The screenplay was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Back in the Box Screenplay Competition and a quarter-finalist in the 2010 Fade In Awards. Currently, it is in production with an outstanding cast and crew, filming throughout the summer of 2015. Stephanie serves as Executive Producer and Director, and makes a cameo as the sharp-tongued barmaid, Charmaine. Following workshops for her recently completed trilogy, "Women You Thought You Knew," she plans to produce all three plays in a single two-week run in fall 2015.
Stephanie has also begun writing another play titled "Ancients Rising," set in ancient times, which she hopes to continue developing in Italy among historic ruins for inspiration. Having recently traveled to Italy in search of her Bohemia, she has indeed found that special place. Viva Italia!
