Bianca Balbuena, 31, is a producer, writer, co-founder, and CEO of Epicmedia Productions Inc., which has produced over 25 feature films. Notable works include "Engkwentro" by Pepe Diokno, winner of the Lion of the Future and Orrizonti Best Film at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, and Lav Diaz's "A Lullaby To The Sorrowful Mystery," which won the Silver Bear at Berlinale 2016. She is also the youngest recipient of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) FIAPF Award for her contributions to Asia Pacific cinema.
Bianca has participated in Produire Au Sud, Rotterdam Producers Lab, Talent Campus Tokyo, Cannes' La Fabrique des Cinemas du Monde, EAVE Ties That Bind, and the Berlinale Talent Project Market, where she received the ARTE Prize for "Above The Clouds," her first French co-production. She has mentored in film labs and served on juries at festivals including Fribourg and Durban. In 2015, she was nominated for Best Foreign Producer at the Madrid International Film Festival.
Her upcoming collaboration with Lav Diaz is the musical feature "The Season Of The Devil," set to premiere early next year. Bianca has produced films showcased and awarded at festivals such as Venice, Berlinale, San Sebastián, Toronto, Busan, Tokyo, Thessaloniki, Rotterdam, Taipei Golden Horse, Sydney, and Karlovy Vary. In the Philippines, she is best known for producing Antoinette Jadaone's "That Thing Called Tadhana," one of the highest-grossing independent films in Philippine box office history, made on a $60,000 budget. She is currently producing Bradley Liew's "Motel Acacia," which participated in the 2017 Jerusalem Sam Spiegel International Film Lab and received support from BiFan's NAFF IT Project and EAVE Ties That Bind. Liew's debut feature, "Singing In Graveyards," premiered at the 2016 Venice Film Festival Critics Week and was selected for the 2017 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, alongside another film she produced, "Those Long Haired Nights."
Her mission is to foster regional collaborations and support deserving directors in bringing their films to a global audience.
