Evgeniy Aleksandrovich Evstigneev was born on October 9, 1926, in Gorky, USSR (now Nizhni Novgorod, Russia). His father, Aleksandr Mikhailovich Evstigneev, worked as a metalworker, while his mother, Maria Ivanovna (née Chernysheva), was an industrial metal-miller. In his youth, Evstigneev also worked as an industrial metalworker in Gorky.
In 1946, Evstigneev attempted to enroll in the Gorky Theatrical School but was rejected by an examiner who remarked, "We do not need short, balding actors." He returned to his industrial job but continued expressing his creativity through music, playing drums in a local jazz band. Noticed by Vitali Lebsky, the director of the Gorky Theatrical School, for his bright smile, musical talent, and stage presence, Evstigneev was admitted to Lebsky's acting class without entrance exams. He studied acting there from 1946 to 1951 and graduated in 1951. Between 1951 and 1954, he worked at the Vladimir City Drama Theatre.
In 1954, Evstigneev moved to Moscow to further his acting career during the cultural "Thaw" initiated by Nikita Khrushchev, which opened new opportunities for artists. From 1954 to 1956, he studied at the Moscow Art Theatre School (MKhAT), where he joined an independent theater company founded by Oleg Efremov, Oleg Tabakov, Igor Kvasha, Galina Volchek, and others, called the 'Studio of Young Actors'. After graduating in 1956, Evstigneev and his colleagues co-founded the Moscow theater company "Sovremennik". In 1957, Evstigneev married actress Galina Volchek, and their son Denis was born in 1961.
Evstigneev gained widespread recognition for his role as Comrade Dynin in Elem Klimov's 1964 film "Dobro pozhalovat, ili postoronnim vkhod vospreshchen" (Welcome, or No Trespassing). He delivered notable performances in films directed by Grigoriy Chukhray, Eldar Ryazanov, Mikhail Shvejtser, Aleksandr Alov, Vladimir Naumov, Karen Shakhnazarov, Leonid Filatov, Stanislav Govorukhin, Vladimir Bortko, Yuriy Kara, and other prominent Russian directors. From 1971 to 1992, he was a permanent member of the Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT) troupe, performing alongside renowned actors such as Anastasiya Georgievskaya, Oleg Efremov, Sergey Yurskiy, Aleksandr Kalyagin, Viktor Sergachyov, Evgeniy Kindinov, and Boris Shcherbakov.
Evstigneev received the USSR State Prize in 1974 for his theatrical achievements and was honored as People's Artist of the USSR in 1983. He earned numerous awards for his work in film and theater. Suffering from a chronic heart condition and complications following a heart attack, Evstigneev passed away on March 4, 1992, in London, England, while preparing for heart surgery. He was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
