Jim Henaghan was born on March 9, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, USA, as James O'Farrell Henaghan, Jr. He was the son of James Henaghan, a writer for the Hollywood Reporter, and the renowned dancer, actress, and singer Gwen Verdon. James Henaghan, Sr., a friend of the Verdon family, impregnated Gwen when she was about 16 or 17. At her family's insistence, she married him, lying about her age to do so, but the marriage was brief. Needing to work, Verdon pursued her career with her parents' support, while young Jim Jr. was mostly raised by his grandparents.
