Mexican filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes creates films deeply rooted in his experience as an immigrant artist, offering a poetic perspective from the intersection of two cultures. Through powerful visuals, he explores the complexities of our shared world while highlighting the possibility for profound change.
In 2020, his latest film "499" earned Best Cinematography at Tribeca and the Special Jury Award at Hot Docs. His work has been featured at festivals including Morelia International Film Festival, BFI London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, garnering critical acclaim. Rodrigo has received support from the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE), Sundance and Tribeca Institutes, among others. His films have aired on national public television through America ReFramed and he has been commissioned by Netflix. He is a recipient of the Sundance Spotlight on Storytellers Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Creative Capital Award.
Based in Oakland, Rodrigo is a Pacific Pioneer Fund grantee, a BAVC Mediamaker Fellow, and winner of the Saul Zaentz Award from the Berkeley Film Foundation. He has served on Diversity Advisory Boards for the San Francisco Film Society and has taught masterclasses, workshops, and seminars at institutions such as Princeton, Boston University, The New School, University of San Diego, Video Consortium, and DOCSMX Film Festival. Additionally, he has collaborated with the American Film Showcase, supporting filmmakers in Mexico and El Salvador. In fall 2020, the Minneapolis Film Society announced it would present the first-ever retrospective of his work.
