Jim was born in Essex, England, to Rosemary, a nurse, and Jeremy, a biology teacher and headmaster. He grew up on the Isle of Wight, where he attended his father’s school. After finishing school, he spent a year teaching in Kenya before enrolling at Exeter University to study Ancient History and Archaeology. While at university, he performed stand-up comedy in local clubs and wrote sketch comedy. Upon graduating, he moved to London and worked in various roles, including as a researcher in the BBC history department and as an assistant at Tiger Aspect. After relocating to Prague, he quickly became involved in the local theatre scene, taking on a variety of roles and soon securing international commercial castings.
His first major television role was in the Fox pilot Masterwork, where he played Mi6 agent Andrew Woodworth opposite Natalie Dormer. Around the same period, he co-founded the theatre company Blood, Love & Rhetoric and, over the next decade, wrote, directed, and performed in around 30 plays. His work included an original interpretation of Jorge Luis Borges’ writings, The Enemies, and performances as Rosencratz in Rosencratz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Mick in The Caretaker, Torvald in Doll’s House, and Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby. He also directed plays by Chekhov, Pinter, Büchner (including an original musical of Woyzeck), and Zurich Plays: A Dada History of Dada, performed in Dada. Additionally, he launched the Blood, Love & Rhetoric Comedy Show, which has gained international acclaim as one of Europe’s best comedy shows and has attracted numerous celebrity guests.
Notable film and television roles include Fergus in Carnival Row, Templar Knight Ulric in Knightfall, the soldier in Bong Joon-ho’s original Snowpiercer movie, and Sgt. Yure Teplov in Shadow and Bone. In 2022, he appeared as George Bologne in the highly anticipated film Chevalier, portrayed Mi6 Agent Robert Thompson alongside Matthew Fox and Joanne Froggart in the drama series Last Light, and played the demon Mammon in the horror film Devil. Jim divides his time between Prague and London.
