Julian began creating 8mm and Super 8 films at age ten, using a camera gifted by his father. One of his early works earned recognition at the Canadian Amateur Film Festival. While continuing to make films, Julian also pursued a musical career as a drummer in a Canadian rock band. In 1979, he decided to focus primarily on the Film & TV industry by mastering the Steadicam under the guidance of its Academy Award-winning inventor, Garrett Brown. In 1984, Julian was honored to tour with Pope John Paul II for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). By 1988, he had established himself as a Steadicam expert, working as both A Camera operator and Steadicam operator on numerous films. His distinctive style and storytelling skills led to his first directing role on the CBS TV series Nash Bridges, starring Don Johnson and Cheech Marin.
Julian’s wide-ranging skills as Director, Cinematographer, Steadicam Operator, Camera Operator, Writer, and Editor have shaped his innovative approach to Film, Television, and Music Video production. Over the past 35 years, he has built a successful career, directing episodes of TV series such as Nash Bridges, The Strip (starring Sean Patrick Flanery of Boondock Saints), and The District (featuring Craig T. Nelson of Poltergeist). He also directed the Lifetime TV movie A Mother's Testimony, starring Kate Jackson (Charlie's Angels), and the short film Heartburn, featuring Dennis Haysbert (The Unit).
Julian has directed music videos across various genres, including the acclaimed City of Dreams: Artists for Tennessee Flood Relief, written by 2010 CCMA Artist of the Year Victoria Banks. His work includes “Live Forever” by Billy Joe Shaver, nominated for a CMT video award, as well as videos for country artist Chad Lee, Craig Hand of Bush Hawg, Gospel/Hip Hop artist David Prince, Rock/Blues artist Jeffrey James, Outlaw Country artist Wes Hayden, The Jeffersons (Lisa Brokop & Paul Jefferson), pop artist Rachel Farris, Latino artist Rigo Sanchez, country artist Taria, folk artist Taylor Pie of the Pozo Seco Singers, “Wal-Mart Girls” by Danny Greigo and John Stallings, “Redneck in All of Us” by Kaleb McIntire, among many others.
