Charming and delicate Heidelinde Weis rose to immediate fame following her dual role in the three-part miniseries Die Frau in Weiß (1971), adapted from the 19th-century novel by mystery author Wilkie Collins. In Germany, the production was deemed a 'Straßenfeger' ('street sweeper') because so many viewers tuned in that streets were virtually deserted during its broadcast. Weis shone as the enigmatic 'woman in white' and the tender, soulful Laura Fairlie, alongside a cast featuring Christoph Bantzer, Pinkas Braun, Eric Pohlmann, and Helmut Käutner.
Born in Austria, Weis attended trade school before studying acting at Vienna’s prestigious Max-Reinhardt Seminar from 1957 to 1958. The following year, she joined the Theater in der Josefstadt ensemble. Since then, she has performed classical roles on numerous stages across Germany and Austria. Her screen debut came in Wolfgang Liebeneiner's romantic comedy Ich heirate Herrn Direktor (1960), where she starred opposite Gerhard Riedmann and Hans Söhnker. She portrayed the leading lady in several well-known films, including Dead Woman from Beverly Hills (1964) and the historical biopic Liselotte von der Pfalz (1966), earning a German Film Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. On television, she headlined productions like Mary Rose (1961) and Eurydike (1964), and co-starred with Claus Biederstaedt in the 20-episode series Meine Frau Susanne (1963).
Over the following decades, Weis guest-starred in popular crime shows such as Der Kommissar (1969) and Derrick (1974), held a recurring role in the family drama Das Erbe der Guldenburgs (1987), and led telemovies including Quadrille (1986), Die selige Edwina Black (1987), and the revenge drama Gabriellas Rache (1995). She co-starred with Christiane Hörbiger in the comedies Neue Freunde, neues Glück (2005) and Das Glück ist ein Kaktus (2011), as well as with Peter Weck in Glück auf vier Rädern (2006) and Ein Ferienhaus auf Ibiza (2008). In the quirky 'odd couple' comedy Liebe für Fortgeschrittene (2008), she portrayed a strong-willed businesswoman involved with an eccentric gardener (Günther Maria Halmer).
Beyond acting, Heidelinde Weis also found success as a singer and songwriter of chansons, releasing three albums between 1975 and 1979.
Her personal life included significant challenges, such as the loss of her husband of 38 years, Hellmuth Duna, in 1998. She survived both breast cancer (2010) and bladder cancer (2016). In 2022, she published a hopeful autobiography titled Das Beste kommt noch (The Best is Yet to Come). She passed away on November 24, 2023, in her hometown of Villach, Kärnten, aged 83.
