Tonantzin Carmelo is a versatile American actress known for lead and supporting roles across film, television, documentaries, video games, and theater. Her breakthrough came with Steven Spielberg's Into the West, which earned her multiple awards and a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Television Movie or Miniseries. Recently, she took prominent roles in Spain and Australia for the TV series The English (BBC) and La Brea (NBC). Tonantzin has consistently garnered acclaim, notably for her lead role as Shayla Stonefeather in the independent thriller Imprint, winning Best Actress at the American Indian Film Festival and receiving a Best Actress nomination at the Hoboken International Film Festival. At the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, she was hailed as "An Indie Darling to Crave" for her role as Teresa opposite John C. Reilly in Entertainment.
Her work extends to video games, including Dead Space, The Crew, Lego Marvel's Avengers, and Cyberpunk 2077. Her motion-capture and voice performance as the villainous Kendra Daniels in Dead Space earned the character a spot on Maxim Magazine's Hottest Video Game Babes of the Year list, maintaining a devoted fan base. In addition to acting, Tonantzin is an accomplished choreographer; her choreography was showcased in the Amazon series Undone and the opera Sweetland, where the LA Times called her a "crucial choreographer."
A language enthusiast, Tonantzin taught herself Spanish as a teenager and serves on the Tongva Language Committee for revitalization. She has studied various Indigenous dialects, including Wampanoag, Lakota, Nahuatl, Diné, Cheyenne, and Shoshone, working with language experts to prepare for roles.
Her diverse talents reflect her multicultural heritage as a Southern California native from suburban Orange County, of Indigenous and Latina descent. Growing up, she toured North America performing Native dances and music with cultural groups while training as a modern dancer with the company Daystar. She discovered her passion for acting at UC Irvine, earning a bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies with a Dance minor. During college, she began acting in theater and independent films. Tonantzin also performed as a singer with Trio del Alma, recording three albums for Canyon Records.
Her professional acting debut was in an educational musical theater production by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, which toured Los Angeles and marked her transition from dancer and musician to actress. She maintains a strong connection with Native Voices at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles, where she has performed and served on the advisory board.
Now based in Los Angeles with her husband, Tonantzin is a passionate advocate for native plants, wildlife, and outdoor activities. In her spare time, she restores her yard as a native wildlife habitat, enjoys birdwatching, and occasionally rescues opossums, all while continuing her work as a musical entertainer, cultural educator, and stage actress.
