LUISA LESCHIN - Short Biography
At age five, Luisa was known as the Shirley Temple of Guatemala, starring in her own TV show, and she has been involved in entertainment ever since. In New York and Los Angeles, she built a successful acting career portraying various Latino stereotypes on numerous major television shows. Frustrated by the lack of well-rounded Latino characters on TV, Luisa transitioned into writing, co-founding and co-writing Latins Anonymous—a highly successful sketch comedy group and play that has seen over 45 productions nationwide.
As a writer, Luisa has contributed to 485 produced television episodes across both drama and comedy genres and has led writers' rooms for several shows. Her credits include three seasons on the award-winning series Just Add Magic (Amazon), three seasons on Mr. Iglesias (Netflix), and the Emmy and Humanitas-nominated second season of Gentefied (Netflix). She also spent five seasons on George Lopez (122 episodes) as co-executive producer, and Everybody Hates Chris (co-executive producer). Working with the same producers, she helped guide the TBS series Are We There Yet? through a 10-90 episode order, contributing to its 100 episodes.
Luisa was honored to co-write the feature-length series finale of Hulu's East Los High after her work on its Emmy-nominated second season. A versatile writer, she has also written hour-long dramas and dramedies, including Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk till Dawn. She sold the original pilot The Black Veil to TNT for premium streaming, Dirty Girls pilot to NBC, and has a deal with Uni-TV for Never Too Late to be Happy, based on a South American format.
In feature films, Luisa wrote Tropico, a dance-driven movie for Universal Family, co-wrote National Guard Wives for Showtime, Amigas-Sweet Fifteen Club for Disney Channel, and the animated The Kid Who Saved Christmas for Warner Bros. Premiere Entertainment. Additional sold pilots include Fox’s Sherri, a sitcom starring Sherri Shepherd; Mambo Palace, an hour-long dramedy; CBS/Paramount's Lorenzo's Wife, an hour-long format; and under a blind pilot deal with WB, she wrote Pedro and Sons, a half-hour single-camera comedy (Propagate).
Through her company Tortuga Productions, Luisa served as Executive Producer on Time Pulse, a time-travel feature film soon to be released.
Awards: Luisa is the proud recipient of the 2019 Norman Lear Lifetime Achievement Writer's Award. She has also earned a Golden Eagle Award for Writing and was the first New Voices Humanitas Award winner.
