Since the mid-1980s, Timpson has been involved in all aspects of the film industry, including managing an arthouse cinema, programming for MGM, organizing short film events, operating drive-ins, producing television and feature films, managing devolved government film funds, and mentoring filmmakers. His distribution company began releasing niche films to Kiwi audiences with Slacker in 1993. In 1994, he launched The Incredibly Strange Film Festival, which remains part of the New Zealand International Film Festival today. In 2003, he co-founded the national film competition 48HOURS alongside mentor Peter Jackson, which helped launch talents like Taika Waititi (Jo Jo Rabbit), Roseanne Liang (Shadow in the Cloud), and Gerard Johnstone (Housebound).
As a producer, Timpson was behind the successful anthology series The ABCs of Death (TIFF 2013) and feature films such as The Devil Dared Me To (SXSW 2006), Housebound (SXSW 2014), Turbo Kid (Sundance 2015), Deathgasm (SXSW 2015), The Greasy Strangler (Sundance 2016), The Field Guide to Evil (SXSW 2018), Censor (Tribeca 2021), and Untitled David Farrier Project (2022). He recently directed the critically acclaimed feature Come to Daddy (Tribeca 2020), starring Elijah Wood. His upcoming directorial project is The Salamander Lives Twice, featuring Adrien Brody.
Timpson was the first recipient of New Zealand's Art Entrepreneur Award and serves on the board of the New Zealand Film Commission. His 35mm print archive is the largest private film collection in the Southern Hemisphere.
