ABOUT
Since graduating from the Icelandic Academy of the Arts in 2006, Stefán Hallur has established himself as an actor, director, dramaturg, and teacher with extensive international and local experience across theater, film, and television. His professional affiliations include the National Theater of Iceland, Reykjavík City Theater, Vesturport, Vér Morðingjar, Sokkabandið, Aldrei Óstelandi, Lab Loki, ART (USA), CDN Orléans (FRA), Blueeyes Productions, Sagafilm, Pegasus Productions, ZikZak Filmworks, Mystery Island, RÚV, ZDF (GER), and ARD (GER), among others. He was a tenured actor at the National Theater of Iceland from 2006 to 2020 and served on the faculty of the drama department at the Icelandic University of the Arts from 2006 to 2017, specializing in dramaturgical analysis and scenework.

Stefán Hallur has played numerous leading roles at the National Theater of Iceland, including Edward in KING LEAR, Lövborg in HEDDA GABLER, Macbeth in MACBETH, Dionysos in THE BACCHAE, Hans in Sofi Oksanen's PURGE, Fjalla-Eyvindur in FJALLA-EYVINDUR, and The Master in THE MASTER AND MARGARITA.
Other notable performances include Jeff Skilling in Reykjavík City Theater’s 2010 production of ENRON, as well as roles in various independent Icelandic and international productions such as Vesturport’s WOYZECK, Sokkabandið’s HÉR OG NÚ staged in Finland and Germany, and the CDN Orléans (FRA) production of JULIUS CAESAR, in collaboration with ART (USA), performed in France and Colombia between 2010 and 2012. He starred in Vesturport’s BASTARDS at Reykjavík City Theater in 2012 and performed in THE DEEP, a one-man show in English, at Harpa Music Hall in 2013.

Stefán Hallur has appeared in numerous domestic and international TV series and sitcoms, including Netflix’s SENSE8 (USA), HERZEN AUF EIS and WEGENER PROJECT for ZDF (GER), and THE SOLVEIG KARLDOTTIR MYSTERIES for ARD (GER). His Icelandic television credits include PRESSA and RÉTTUR 2, for which he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Icelandic Film & TV Awards in 2010. He played the lead in RÚV’s FLATEY ENIGMA (2018) and appeared in BROT (2019). His film credits feature JÓHANNES, ROKLAND, DESEMBER, and DJÚPIÐ, with nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the Icelandic Film & TV Awards in 2008 and 2012 for the latter two films.

Stefán Hallur earned a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination at the 2014 Icelandic Theater Awards for LÚKAS at the National Theater, alongside a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for THE CRUCIBLE the same year. In 2016, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for UM ÞAÐ BIL at the National Theater, and in 2017, he received a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the one-man play I'D RATHER GOYA KEPT ME FROM MY SLEEP THAN SOME OTHER ARSEHOLE, staged at the National Theater in collaboration with his independent theater group ST/Una. He won Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2017 for the National Theater of Iceland’s production of GOTT FÓLK and secured Best Supporting Role for CONSENT at the National Theater in 2019.

Between 2008 and 2013, Stefán Hallur directed and produced works in collaboration with the National Theater of Iceland, the Ministry of Education, and The Association of Independent Theaters, including Anthony Neilson’s PENETRATOR and THE CENSOR, Marius Von Mayenburg’s THE UGLY ONE, William Shakespeare’s MACBETH, and Dennis Kelly’s AFTER THE END. His adaptation of Saint-Exupéry’s LE PETIT PRINCE at the National Theater in 2014 received critical acclaim in Iceland. He also directed and co-wrote ÞITT EIGIÐ LEIKRIT/YOUR OWN PLAY VOL 1 & 2 for the National Theater of Iceland, an interactive two-year project featuring plays for children and young adults where the audience determines the outcome. Both productions were nominated for Best Children’s Play at the Icelandic Theater Awards in 2019 and 2020. His most recent project is KJARVAL, a children’s play about Iceland’s most famous painter, which he wrote and directed for Reykjavík City Theater. It premiered in September 2021 and continues to run.
RADIO / DIRECTOR / AWARDS / NOMINATIONS
In 2016, Stefán Hallur directed LIFUN, a four-part radio play series for the National Broadcasting Corporation (RÚV), which won Best Radio Play at the Icelandic Theater Awards in 2017. He also received a nomination for 48 by Jón Atli Jónasson, produced by RÚV, which was nominated for Best Radio Play in 2018.
