Marcello, named after Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni, is the youngest of five siblings. His parents, Assunta Cacioppo, a homemaker, and Carmelo Cacioppo, an auto mechanic, immigrated from Agrigento, Sicily to Toronto, Canada between 1947 and 1966, which is also Marcello's hometown. Growing up in a vibrant Italian household sparked his passion for performing. The lively personalities within his large family inspired his imagination, leading him to mimic the accents and expressions of relatives and neighbors alike. This marked the beginning of his journey into the arts.
Around age eight, Marcello developed a passion for music. He would sneak into his brother’s home studio when no one was around and play the drums. Influenced by his brother Lu Caci, guitarist of the bands Mar-KZ and Ugly Melon, Marcello soon took drumming seriously and acquired his own drum kit. His dedication grew during high school, where he performed at venues like Toronto City Hall and the Vanier Cup, the Canadian university football championship, for two consecutive years. After graduating, he continued playing in local bars alongside various musicians, including family members. Later, he became the drummer for the short-lived band Sons of Ben with Jeremy Renner and John Stauffer.
One evening downtown after a gig, a photographer from The Toronto Sun approached Marcello to take his picture for an upcoming feature. Seizing the chance, Marcello suggested including his twin brother, Marco Cacioppo. The photographer loved the concept, and the newspaper created a sign featuring the Toronto Blue Jays logo with the phrase "Let two it," coinciding with the Blue Jays’ second World Series appearance. The twins were featured as the Sunshine Boys holding the sign on the day the Blue Jays won their second World Series. Shortly after, a local theatrical agent contacted the photographer, expressing interest in meeting the Cacioppo twins. Following some calls, a meeting, and a cold read, the agency signed them and began sending both Marcello and Marco to auditions, both together and individually.
Marcello’s acting strengths stem not only from his striking green eyes but also from his rich Italian heritage, which adds depth and authenticity to the characters he portrays.
His first paid role was in a Coca-Cola commercial. Since then, Marcello has performed on stage in numerous plays, as well as in independent short and feature films that have appeared on the festival circuit and had limited theatrical releases. He was also featured in Dolce & Gabbana’s 2008 fall campaign alongside Gisele Bündchen, photographed by Steven Meisel, and appeared in the September fall and winter issues of Vogue.
Marcello continues to explore the human condition in his daily life. When not acting, he enjoys cooking and hosting friends and guests at one of his pizzerias, Best Fckn Pizza.
