Born Elaine Sterling on May 18, 1928, this striking blonde grew up in St. Louis before starting her career as a face and hand model for cosmetic advertisements. After a brief stint in New York City, she relocated to Hollywood, where she secured a contract with MGM. Under her birth name, she appeared in several major musical films for the studio, including Easter Parade (1948) and Neptune's Daughter (1949), but found few opportunities for advancement. After leaving MGM, she adopted the stage name Sara Shane and signed a one-year deal with Universal-International, appearing in films like Sign of the Pagan (1954) and Magnificent Obsession (1954). During this period, she married William Hollingsworth; the couple divorced in 1957 after eight years together.
Her roles grew larger once she began freelancing, though the quality of films varied. Notable projects included Three Bad Sisters (1956), The King and Four Queens (1956) alongside Clark Gable, and Affair in Havana (1957), all of which featured her in prominent parts. She then transitioned to television, appearing throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s on shows such as Dragnet (1951), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955), The Outer Limits (1963), and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964). Her film career highlight came with her portrayal of a Jane-like character opposite Gordon Scott’s Tarzan in Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure (1959), considered one of the stronger entries in the Tarzan series.
Having never fully embraced Hollywood’s social scene, she retired from the entertainment industry in her late 30s. She turned her focus to writing and pharmaceutical studies, authoring two books: the novel Zulma and Take Control of Your Health and Escape the Sickness Industry, a guide promoting healthy living. Seeking to escape Los Angeles pollution, she relocated to Australia, where she currently resides on her five-acre property.
