In April 1948, Bengali-speaking Indira and Tarun Kumar Bhaduri from Jabalpur welcomed a daughter named Jaya, who was enrolled at St. Joseph's Convent School in Bhopal.
Jaya began her acting career at 15 with the Bengali film Mahanagar. She established herself in Bollywood following the release of Guddi. Over the years, she starred in numerous Hindi films, including hits like Jawani Diwani, Uphaar, Anamika, Abhimaan, Sholay, Bawarchi, Chupke Chupke, and Zanjeer. Her acting career spanned from 1963 to 1981. Additionally, she penned the script for Shahenshah.
She married Amitabh Srivastav, also known as Bachchan, and they had two children, Shweta and Abhishek. Amitabh is the son of Teji and Harivansh Rai Srivastav, who come from Sikh-Hindu backgrounds.
Jaya retired from acting after 1981. Her married life encountered challenges, notably due to Amitabh's widely reported affair with actress Rekha. Their lives were further disrupted when Amitabh suffered a serious injury inflicted by actor Puneet Issar during the filming of Coolie, an accident that nearly cost him his life.
The family faced another crisis in 2005 when Amitabh, who suffered from asthma, was hospitalized at Lilavati Hospital due to severe abdominal pain.
Amitabh recovered, and the family — including Jaya, Amitabh, their son Abhishek, and his wife — continues to be prominent figures in Bollywood. Jaya has also earned numerous awards acknowledging her contributions to the film industry.
