Angela Joann Shelton is an acclaimed filmmaker whose semi-autobiographical film Tumbleweeds (1999) won the filmmaker's trophy at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival and earned lead actress Janet McTeer an Academy Award® nomination along with a Golden Globe® win.
Following Tumbleweeds, Angela directed the well-received adaptation of Kaye Gibbons's novel Charms for the Easy Life (2002), featuring Gena Rowlands.
In 2004, Angela made her directorial debut with Searching for Angela Shelton, a documentary exploring women across the U.S. sharing her name. During the project, she uncovered that 70% of these women had experienced rape, childhood sexual abuse, or domestic violence. The film garnered numerous awards and sparked a global grassroots movement of survivors and humanitarian groups dedicated to raising awareness about abuse.
Her memoir, Finding Angela Shelton, published in 2006, details how her cross-country journey while creating the documentary transformed her life.
Dedicated to aiding others, Angela spent over a decade traveling worldwide as a social activist, raising funds for rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters through public speaking. She partnered with trauma-informed care providers to develop a healing program assisting abuse survivors in overcoming trauma.
On screen, Angela has appeared in films such as 9 Line (2014), Comfortably Numb (1995), The Shrink Is In (2001), and The Big Time (2002). Her television credits include Pacific Blue, Chicago Hope, and Becker. She earned a regional EMMY for her role as Safe Side Superchick in the Safe Side Series (2004, 2006), created by Julie Clark, the founder of Baby Einstein.
Angela wrote, produced, and directed the feature film Heart, Baby! (2018), starring Gbenga Akinnagbe, Jackson Rathbone, and Keir O'Donnell. The film tells the true story of a prison boxer who was offered freedom to compete in the 1984 Olympics but chose to decline.
In Eagle and the Albatross (2019), Angela drew from her own experiences with mentors to create a poignant comedy about an orphaned half-Korean girl who seeks help from a widowed optometrist, bonding over their shared love of golf. The catch is, he has only three months to live.
