He graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Cinecittà, Rome, Italy, where he studied under Gianni Amelio, Carlo Di Palma, Furio Scarpelli, and Roberto Perpignani. He has taught at the University of Buenos Aires and the National School of Cinematographic Experimentation and Production (ENERC).
He directed television fiction series including Bajamar, Poliladron, Zona de Riesgo, and Cosecharás tu siembra, earning the Konex Award as the best TV director of the decade for his work.
His documentary credits include El ángel sin techo, La palabra viva, and audiovisual projects such as Balada para un Kaiser Carabela with Luis Alberto Spinetta, Ciudad de pobres corazones, and Solo los chicos with Fito Páez.
In 1998, he released La Sonámbula, co-written with Ricardo Piglia and Fabián Bielinsky, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, had its European debut at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, and won awards in Havana, Toulouse, Nantes, as well as the Silver Condor Awards from the Argentine Association of Cinematographic Chroniclers.
His 2005 film Adiós, querida Luna received accolades at the La Plata International Film Festival and the Estepona Fantastic Film Festival in Spain.
Aballay, the man without fear, based on Antonio Di Benedetto’s short story Aballay, garnered international honors, eight South Awards from the Argentine Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences including Best Director, three Silver Condor Awards from the Argentine Association of Cinematographic Chroniclers, and was Argentina’s submission for the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars.
In 2015, together with Ana Piterbarg, he created the three-part series Los Siete Locos y los Lanzallamas, adapted by Ricardo Piglia from Roberto Arlt’s novels, which won multiple awards and received eight Martín Fierro Award nominations.
His documentary La Boya was nominated by the Argentine Film Academy for Best Documentary Film in 2018 and won awards at the Sea Film Festival in Punta del Este and the International Film Festival of the Heights in Jujuy.
His latest film, Immortal, premiered in the official competition at the Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya.
He served as General Producer and Artistic Director for the 28th and 29th editions of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival.
His body of work is studied and showcased in museums, universities, and festivals worldwide.
