Born in 1985 in Beaufort, South Carolina, Marrero was raised with discipline and structure. He is the son of Dr. Myra Ancheta, a retired United States Marine Corps officer, and Hans Marrero Sr., also a retired Marine Corps member. From the age of four, Marrero was immersed in disciplined martial arts, influenced by his father, the Chief Instructor of hand-to-hand combat at Paris Island. He quickly absorbed the skills and combat techniques of the family tradition. Continuing this legacy, Marrero trained in various martial arts worldwide, including Kobushi-Sessen Jutsu, Shorinji-Kempo, Kyo Kushin, Kai-Kan, Aikido, Judo, Matsukazi-Ryu, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After settling in Arizona, he became fascinated with Mixed Martial Arts, a sport emerging from the underground scene. While in college, Marrero began competing professionally at 18.
Over seven years, Marrero headlined events across multiple US states and internationally, compiling a professional record of 13-3 in kickboxing, 9-4 in boxing, and 26-8 in MMA. Known for his well-rounded skills, he gained recognition for his signature submission move, the Armbar, which he used to quickly finish many opponents.
From 2003 to 2006, Marrero served as a senior instructor at the Police Combative Training Academy, teaching close-quarter combat to law enforcement and military personnel. He also dedicated time to coaching a competitive mixed martial arts team.
Achieving success in combat sports, Marrero pursued his passion for film by relocating to New York. Leveraging his martial arts expertise and natural charisma, he launched his acting career with Lionsgate's sports drama Warrior, portraying MMA fighter Diego Santana, an opponent to Tommy Conlon, played by Tom Hardy.
Since then, Marrero has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including A Walk Among the Tombstones, Person of Interest, Creed, Daredevil, and The Blacklist. His career has taken him beyond the US to countries such as China, Indonesia, Thailand, and India.
As an established actor, Marrero aims to transition into action directing and ultimately portray one of the most iconic villains on screen.
