Alice Backes enjoyed a lengthy career, appearing in 140 film roles such as 'I Want to Live,' 'The Glory Guys,' and 'The Cat from Outer Space,' as well as numerous television shows including 'Bachelor Father,' 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' and 'Lux Video Theatre.' She also featured in many radio programs like 'This Is Your FBI,' 'Dangerous Assignment,' 'Suspense,' and 'The Whistler.' It’s clear that Alice was a dedicated and hardworking performer. Beyond acting, she was a talented violinist, served in the Women's Branch of the Naval Reserve during the war, and devoted much of her life to charitable causes, continuing her involvement even after retiring from the screen. Born in 1923, Alice graduated from high school before attending the University of Utah. After the war, she moved to Hollywood, quickly landing minor roles in films, television, and radio. For nearly fifty years, she worked consistently, focusing on character parts. Her unassuming appearance—though she was tall by Hollywood standards—allowed her to convincingly portray everyday characters such as nurses, doctors, dentists, librarians, waitresses, judges, and farmer's wives. She portrayed a historical figure only once, playing Hedda Hopper in 'Gable and Lombard.' Alice retired in 1997, making her final appearance in an episode of 'Columbo,' a fitting final role. She passed away ten years later.
