Tarique Qayumi's daring escape from Afghanistan, hiding in the back of a truck with his mother, inspired his passion for storytelling. He completed an episode for CBC's Allegiance through the 2023 Warner Access x Academy Directing Program.
His second feature, "Black Kite," a historical drama that combines animation, documentary, and live-action, premiered at TIFF in 2017, was showcased at 20 festivals, and earned three Leo Awards for Best Writer, Best Direction, and Best Picture. The film was acquired by Amazon Studios. Recently, Qayumi finished his third feature, Conceiving Clara, in collaboration with Telefilm. His TV series pitch, "Kabul Kitchen," won the Creator of Colour Incubator at TIFF 2021 and secured pre-development funding from CBC.
Qayumi enjoys working with actors and credits his mentor, Judith Weston, for his growth. He also found filming his short film, Mara's World, on a virtual production stage to be a rewarding experience. Additionally, he has served as a mentor at the Whistler Film Festival Screenwriting Labs.
Early in his career, Qayumi contributed to popular Afghan TV shows such as Truth Unveiled, The Defenders, and Sesame Street, making a notable impact on local culture.
