Louie Schwartzberg is an acclaimed cinematographer, director, and producer with a distinguished career spanning over 30 years, delivering stunning visuals for feature films, television, documentaries, and commercials.
As the sole cinematographer globally to have continuously shot time-lapse footage 24/7 for more than three decades, Schwartzberg is a pioneering visual artist who connects with audiences by telling stories that celebrate life and unveil the mysteries and wisdom of nature, people, and places.
His recent theatrical works include the 3D IMAX film "Mysteries of the Unseen World" in collaboration with National Geographic, narrated by Forest Whitaker, and "Wings of Life," a feature-length documentary for Disneynature narrated by Meryl Streep.
"Mysteries of the Unseen World" explores invisible realms too slow, fast, small, or vast for the human eye. Produced with support from the National Science Foundation, Lockheed Martin, and Siemens, the film premiered nationwide in Fall 2013 to critical acclaim from both audiences and experts.
Through time-lapse, high-speed, and macro cinematography, Schwartzberg offers an intimate, high-definition look at the hidden lives of butterflies, hummingbirds, bats, and bees in "Wings of Life," highlighting the vital and fragile relationship these pollinators share with flowers, which underpin a third of the global food supply.
Following its theatrical release, "Wings of Life" is available on Blu-ray and DVD via Amazon and On-Demand on Netflix. The film has garnered numerous accolades, including Best Theatrical Program at the Jackson Hole Science Media Awards, Best Cinematography at the Ocean Film Festival, and Wild Talk Africa's Roscar Award.
Beyond feature films, Schwartzberg curates Moving Art™, the first global collection of 2D and 3D moving images designed as fine art for digital screens, ranging from natural landscapes to cityscapes and visual effects. Aimed at inspiring and educating while shifting perspectives, Moving Art™ is accessible on IPTV devices such as Roku, iOS and Android platforms, and debuted as an Original Series on Netflix in January 2014—the first 4K content on the platform. Several Moving Art™ shorts, including the viral hits "Gratitude" and "Beauty of Pollination," have amassed over 36 million YouTube views and spawned related projects such as books (published by Hay House and Sterling) and webinar series (MentorsChannel). As an artist and innovator, Schwartzberg transformed 35mm time-lapse photography into a captivating art form used in feature films and other media. His breathtaking nature, aerial, and everyday life imagery has enriched films by directors like Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Haggis, and Ridley Scott, including titles such as "American Beauty," "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Crash," "Erin Brockovich," "E.T.," "Independence Day," "Jerry Maguire," "Koyaanisqatsi," "Men in Black," and "Twister."
Founder of BlackLight Films, Schwartzberg produced projects like "America's Heart & Soul" for Walt Disney Pictures, the 26-episode "America!" series for The Hallmark Channel, and the hour-long documentary "Chasing the Light," which aired on PBS and various networks.
A sought-after speaker for corporate and nonprofit events worldwide, Schwartzberg is active in the TED community, with two of his recent TEDx talks ranking among the most viewed of all time. Holding an MFA from UCLA Film School, he has chaired and served as executive director of the Action! Vote Coalition and served on the boards of the Earth Communications Office and the Environmental Media Association. He is a member of both the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Schwartzberg sold his former imagery distribution company to Getty Images for $18 million while retaining key intellectual property rights.
Throughout his pioneering career, Schwartzberg has received numerous awards, including two Clio Awards for Best Environmental PSAs, an Emmy nomination for Best Cinematography for "Oceans of Air" on Discovery Channel, the Truly Moving Picture Award at the Heartland Film Festival for "America's Heart & Soul," and Best Film-Inspiration at the Ocean Film Festival for "Gratitude." He was honored among the "Top 70 Cinematographers" by the On Film Kodak Salute Series and recently received the NAAPC Pollinator Protector award.
