Jana Bittnerova began her acting career at ten years old in her hometown of Zlaté Moravce. At 21, she earned a master's degree in dramatic art from the Academy of Dramatic Art and Music in Bratislava. She then joined the National Theatre Andrej Bagar troupe in Nitra, Slovakia, performing in cities including Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow, Zakopane, Saint Petersburg, and Moscow. Her notable roles included Catherine de Heilbronn by H. von Kleist, Nicole in Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, and Sonetka in Lady Macbeth of the Village by Leskov. In 1990, she co-founded Teatro Tatro with other artists and played the dual role of the mother in Sir Halewyn by Michel Ghelderode. She also toured Czechoslovakia with 150 performances of Salome by Jana Juranova.
In 1992, Jana moved to Paris to refine her craft, studying under Stuart Seide and Mario Gonzales at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. There, she met Philippe Adrien and performed in Ivanov by Anton Chekhov and Rêves by J.L. Bauer. She appeared in prestigious Parisian theaters such as Théâtre du Châtelet (alongside Fanny Ardant in Passion and Yannis Kokos), Théâtre de Chaillot (in 99 duos with J.C. Galotta), and the Opéra National de Paris, where she played Manuelita in Carmen directed by Yves Beaunesne. She collaborated with renowned artists including Robert Wilson, Zabou Breitman, Guillaume Galienne, André Engel, and Robert Johnson as an actress-mime.
Her work also extended to television and film, collaborating with directors like Luc Besson, J.P. Salomé, Nina Companeez, Yann Gozlan, J.P. Mocky, Mario Andreacchio, François Ozon, Peter Kassovitz, Gérard Verger, Noémie Lvovsky, Cécile Telerman, and Jacques Audiard. She portrayed Olga in "Le cri du homard" by Nicolas Guiot, which won the César Award for Best Short Film in 2013.
In 2014, she played Aglaé in K. Kwahulé's Misterioso119 and the mother in Michel Gondry's Microbe and Gasoil. In 2016, she appeared as Madame Stanlova, a Russian ballet teacher, in Noémie Saglio's Telle mère telle fille alongside Juliette Binoche, as Yaël’s mother in Rachid Hami’s The Melody, and as Vivianne in Alexandre Castagnetti’s La Colle.
In 2017, she featured as Béatrice in I feel good by B. Délépine and G. Kervern with Jean Dujardin and Yolande Moreau. In 2019, she played the faculty secretary in L. Bergery’s film L'Étreinte. The following year, she portrayed Vladi in Clovis Cornillac’s Couleurs de l'incendie, and in 2022, she took on the role of Maria in C. Fargeat’s The Substance.
