Yulia Olegovna Volkova, born on 20 February 1985 and also known as Julia, is a Russian singer, recording artist, and actress. She gained fame as a member of the Russian girl group t.A.T.u., alongside Lena Katina. Managed by Ivan Shapovalov in Moscow from March 1999, the group secured a record deal with Universal Music Russia and later signed with Universal's sub-label Interscope Records in 2001.
Their debut single, "All the Things She Said," reached number one in countries such as Australia, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The song sparked controversy due to a scene featuring Julia and Lena kissing. t.A.T.u. released three English-language studio albums, including their best-selling album to date, 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane, three Russian albums, and four compilation albums. They also pursued side projects, including the 2011 film You and I, and founded T.A. Music, a Russian record label. In March 2011, t.A.T.u.'s management announced the group's split amid conflicts and issues between the members.
In June 2011, Julia embarked on a solo career, signing with Gala Records and releasing her debut single "All Because of You" in November 2011. This track was also issued in Russian as "I'll Change the World." Her worldwide debut single, "Didn't Wanna Do It," was released on 21 August 2012.
Born in Moscow, Russian SFSR, to a middle-class family, Volkova's father, Oleg Volkov, was a businessman, and her mother, Larissa Volkova, worked as a hairdresser. At six years old, she enrolled in music school to learn piano. At nine, she joined Russia's children's chorus Neposedi, where she met Lena Katina. At 11, she transferred to a school focused on artistic talent and left Neposedi three years later to join t.A.T.u. While Volkova claims she was expelled from Neposedi for misbehavior, representatives of the group say she graduated like other members at a certain age.
In 1996 and 1998, Julia appeared in sketches on the children's comedy TV show Yeralash.
Volkova made her film debut alongside Lena Katina and Mischa Barton in You and I, a story about two teenage girls who fall in love at a Moscow t.A.T.u. concert. The film is based on the novel t.A.T.u. Come Back, inspired by true events.
In August 2011, Julia filmed the movie Zombie Fever, a Russian-language zombie horror-comedy shot in Minsk, Belarus, produced by New Wave Production in the style of films like Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. Zombie Fever premiered on 15 August 2013 in Russia under the title "Zombi kanikuly 3D," with Julia playing the lead role of Natasha.
The video for "Love in Every Moment" was released in 2014 as a short film titled "Together Apart," part of the CORNETTO's CUPIDITY project. In it, Julia plays one of the cupids trying to reunite a couple in a long-distance relationship. On 18 February 2014, she made a cameo appearance in an episode of the Slovak daily TV series Panelák.
In May 2004, Volkova announced her pregnancy by then-boyfriend Pavel Sidorov, which sparked controversy due to Sidorov already having a wife and daughter. Their daughter, Viktoria Pavlovna "Vika" Volkova, was born on 23 September 2004 in Moscow. Volkova no longer maintains contact with Sidorov.
From 2007, Volkova was in a long-term relationship with businessman Parviz Yasinov. Reports suggested they married. She gave birth to a son, Samir, on 27 December 2007 in Moscow. In 2008, media speculated that she was diagnosed with postpartum depression, though this was never confirmed. In 2010, Volkova announced that she and Yasinov had separated but denied rumors that she was estranged from her son.
In a January 2012 interview, Volkova stated that she no longer communicates with Lena Katina.
