Biographie
Born November 1, 1942, Marcia Wallace was the eldest of three children to an Iowa general store owner. She faced a difficult childhood marked by alcoholism and physical abuse. As a teenager, she performed in high school plays and later attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, majoring in English and theatre.
Initially, Marcia's humor stemmed from her weight, often portraying plump, self-deprecating roles in musicals like "The Music Man." To supplement her modest income, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Bronx. Over time, she lost much of her excess weight yet continued to make people laugh. In 1968, she gained valuable experience with the improvisational comedy group "The Fourth Wall," performing off-Broadway, while also studying under acting coach Uta Hagen.
Marcia began building her on-camera career with minor roles on shows such as "The Invaders" (courtroom spectator), "Bewitched" (Darrin's secretary), and "The Brady Bunch" (saleswoman). Her first significant exposure came with recurring appearances on The Merv Griffin Show (1962). This led to her breakthrough role as Carol Kester, the talkative receptionist on The Bob Newhart Show (1972), which she played for seven years, becoming beloved for her portrayal of the slightly ditzy co-worker seeking "that special guy."
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she guest-starred on numerous popular series including "Love, American Style," "The Love Boat," "Fantasy Island," "CHiPS," "Magnum, P.I.," "Gimme a Break," "Finder of Lost Loves," "Murder, She Wrote," "Alf," "Night Court," "Small Wonder," and "Charles in Charge." She also appeared in TV movies such as The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979), Gridlock (1980), and Pray TV (1980), as well as films including Teen Witch (1989), My Mom's a Werewolf (1989), and Ghoulies Go to College (1991). Additionally, she maintained a steady presence in commercials for over thirty years, promoting brands like Kraft a la Carte, Crest, and Taster's Choice.
After her success on The Bob Newhart Show, Marcia remained in the public eye as a recurring panelist on game shows including "The Match Game," "Password," "The $10,000 Pyramid," and "Hollywood Squares." On stage, she performed in summer stock and dinner theatre productions of comedies such as "Plaza Suite," "Born Yesterday," "The Prisoner of Second Avenue," "The Sunshine Boys," and "Last of the Red Hot Lovers," as well as musicals like "Gypsy" and "Promises, Promises."
In 1985, Marcia was diagnosed with breast cancer. She became an advocate and speaker for breast cancer awareness, emphasizing the importance of early detection. She also cared for her husband, hotelier Denny Hawley, during his battle with pancreatic cancer until his death in 1992. The couple adopted one child, Michael.
Marcia experienced a resurgence in her career through voice acting. She won an Emmy for her role as Bart Simpson’s teacher, Mrs. Edna Krabappel, on the long-running animated series The Simpsons (1989). Her voice work extended to animated shows including "Darkwing Duck," "Raw Toonage," "Camp Candy," "Batman: The Animated Series," "Aladdin," "Cow and Chicken," "The Angry Beavers," and "Rugrats," as well as the animated film Monsters University (2013).
She also guest-hosted comedy clubs and talk shows on television and co-hosted a cable diet show. Marcia continued speaking engagements and released her memoir in 2004, Don't Look Back, We're Not Going That Way!, which blends her struggles with humor and optimism.
In the 2000s, she appeared as Maggie the housekeeper on the satirical TV series That's My Bush! (2001) with Timothy Bottoms and portrayed Annie Wilkes on the soap opera The Young and the Restless (2009). She also featured in films such as Forever for Now (2004), Big Stan (2007), and Tru Loved (2008).
After a long battle with illness, Marcia Wallace passed away on October 25, 2013, at age 70 due to complications from breast cancer, including pneumonia and sepsis.
