Biographie
Clive Smith has been a prominent figure in the global animation industry for over four decades. Alongside partners Michael Hirsh and Patrick Loubert, he co-founded Nelvana in the early 1970s, helping to establish Toronto as a key hub in the field. Together, they expanded the company from a small three-person studio into one of the world's top entertainment firms, now part of Corus Entertainment.
Originally from Britain, Smith graduated from art school in London. After exploring illustration, street art, and music, he launched his film career in 1964 at a small West London studio, animating for The Beatles and the Lone Ranger TV series. In 1967, he moved to Canada to work with Al Guest and Vladimir Goetzelman, creating short films and commercials. It was around this time that Smith met his future Nelvana collaborators.
Throughout his career, Clive has produced and directed numerous projects both in Canada and internationally. His credits include co-producing and directing the cult animated feature Rock & Rule, as well as various television specials and series such as Cosmic Christmas, The Devil and Daniel Mouse, Babar, Tintin, Rupert, and Beetlejuice. Following Cosmic Christmas, George Lucas invited Smith to direct the first animated Star Wars special, A Wookiee's Christmas, featuring C-3PO and R2-D2. He also directed the animated TV series Family Dog, working with producers Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton. In 1997, Clive directed the animated feature Pippi Longstocking in collaboration with Swedish and German partners, and helmed a highly complex animated film for South Korea's Expo '95 in OMNIMAX format alongside IMAX founder Graeme Ferguson.
Smith departed Nelvana in 2001 to focus on personal projects and has since been developing and writing feature films through his company, Musta Costa Fortune Inc. His work includes developing an original animated musical with Pete Townshend based on Townshend’s screenplay The Boy Who Heard Music, as well as an original live-action/animated feature titled The Rather Unusual Adventures of Ice Cream Girl & Mr. Licorice.
Residing in both Toronto and London, Smith continues to consult and finance various television, music, and web projects. He is also active in the businesses of his wife, Melleny Melody, and son, Zachary Brown-Smith, including Play Records and Play Deep Studios.
