He began his photography career collaborating with notable artists like Greg Gorman, David LaChapelle, Douglas Kirkland, and Steven Meisel, who captured his images for L'Uomo Vogue, the CK One campaign, and the Italian Vogue cover. One of his early projects involved photographing Antonio Sabato Jr. for the book No Excuse - Workout for Life.
In addition to numerous magazine covers and fashion editorials, Brian To has produced advertising campaigns for Pure Beauty, Johnson & Johnson, Walgreens, and television networks The WB and CW. His work includes shows such as Starlet, featuring Faye Dunaway and Vivica A. Fox; The Closer, starring Kyra Sedgwick; the pilot TRUE with Anne Heche; and the reality series Beauty and the Geek 2, which earned a 2006 Promax/BDA Silver Award for outdoor print campaigns.
A member of the Cinematographer's Guild Local 600, Brian To also provided still photography for several Randal Kleiser films, including Lovewrecked with Amanda Bynes, Chris Carmack, Jaimie-Lynn DiScala, and Jonathan Bennett; Red Riding Hood featuring Lainie Kazan, Debi Mazar, and Joey Fatone; and It's My Party, where he photographed Eric Roberts, Bruce Davison, Marlee Matlin, Olivia Newton-John, George Segal, Lee Grant, and Roddy McDowall.
Brian To also captured the poster and stills for independent, award-winning films produced by Gina Goff and Laura Kellum, such as Girl Play, starring Dom DeLuise and Mink Stole, and Out at the Wedding, featuring Andrea Marcellus, Desi Lydic, Mike Farrell, Reginald VelJohnson, and Charlie Schlatter.
Inspired by photographing director Bryan Singer (Superman Returns, X-Men) and the late Academy Award-winning director John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Marathon Man), Brian To directed his debut film Audit, starring Sally Kirkland, Alexis Arquette, and Judy Greer. The film premiered at the IFP West / L.A. Film Festival, won Best Short Film at the WIN Femme Film Festival, and earned Best Short and Best Actress awards for Judy Greer at the Dublin Film Festival. After being named No. 5 on Filmmaker Magazine's 2002 list of "25 New Faces of Indie Film," Audit was included in the DVD/home video compilation Boxer Shorts and aired on The Independent Film Channel and Here! TV.
Committed to community service, Brian To has directed Public Service Announcements supporting homeless families, battered women and children, and victims of human trafficking. He also directed the educational documentary Children of Incarcerated Parents and The Virtual Sex Project, a series of three USC interactive videos aimed at reducing high-risk sexual behavior among young adults.
