Biographie
Andrea Velasco, a Chilean actress and singer, was born in Santiago, Chile. From a young age, she demonstrated a passion for acting, dancing, and music. Drawn to soul and jazz, she began teaching herself to sing. At 15, she started studying popular music and singing, building a career influenced by Afro and Latin rock. Concurrently, she participated in numerous theatrical productions during her school years, which inspired her to pursue formal education in modern dance and acting.
In 2001, she enrolled in the Acting program at Finis Terrae University in Santiago. The following year, she received a "Merit Diploma" for her outstanding performance in the School of Acting.
In 2003, she won the "IV Festival of Short Plays" with Crucidrama, a play she wrote and later directed during the contest's final presentation, sparking her interest in theater direction and playwriting.
In 2005, she traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to further her studies in acting, theatrical direction, and music.
Returning to Chile in 2006, she earned her BA as a Professional Actress, achieving the highest score on the final exam for her portrayal of Mama Ubú in Alfred Jarry's King Ubú.
In 2007, the Chilean National Council for the Arts and Culture awarded her an "Honorable Mention" for her play El Sobre Azul (The Blue Envelope) at the XIII National Contest of Playwrights. The play was later showcased as a staged reading at the Chilean National Theater.
In 2009, she received recognition from FONDART (National Fund for the Development of Culture and Arts), a prestigious Chilean government award supporting artistic projects, for El Sobre Azul, which she continues to direct in its stage productions.
As a singer, she re-entered Santiago's music scene in 2007, performing with a jazz and soul quartet. She has also contributed to various independent musical projects spanning rock and pop genres.
Andrea has appeared in numerous theatrical and audiovisual works.
Her film debut came in 2010 with Que Pena Tu Vida, playing Ángela De María, directed by Nicolás López and produced by Sobras International Production. Following the film's success, a sequel titled Que Pena Tu Boda was released in 2011. For this role, she was nominated in 2012 for Best Movie Actress at the Altazor Awards. In 2013, she starred in Que Pena Tu Familia, produced by Eli Roth and Netflix. Andrea was part of the first romantic comedy trilogy in Latin America, with all three films becoming the most-watched comedies in Chile in recent years. Netflix released the trilogy and a special series edition, Que Pena Tu Serie, worldwide in 2015.
In 2014, she made her solo singing debut with the album Piñata, earning a nomination for Revelation Artist at the 2015 Chile Music Awards (Pulsar).
In 2018, she debuted in New York theater with the play Verano Verano by Myrna Casas at the IATI Theater, winning Best Actress at the ATI Awards in 2019. Her performance in the short film Desde el Principio by Miguel Soliman garnered Best Actress awards at the Rahway Film Festival and LA Diversity Film Festival, and the film won Best Short Film at the New York Latino Film Festival 2018. It was acquired by HBO in 2019 for worldwide on-demand streaming.
Currently based in the USA, Andrea continues to develop her career both in Chile and internationally, working across film, television, theater, and music.
