Biographie
Born in Vienna, Austria, Birgit made her stage debut at the age of five. By eleven, she was directing and choreographing her first musical. She graduated high school with top honors, achieving a perfect grade point average. During her teenage years, she excelled competitively in various sports and dance. Birgit draws deep inspiration from Danny Kaye, classic MGM musical performers, and iconic musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, and West Side Story. She left her medical studies to pursue Musical Theater, landing one of her first roles as Little Red Riding Hood in Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods, a composer she greatly admires.
Her television debut as an actress was also her first leading role, playing Mariandl in the Austrian remake Hofrat Geiger (1996). In 1998, she won the German Rising Movie Talent Award and traveled to Los Angeles to study film acting. Returning to Vienna, she completed her studies in Musical Theater Directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts before relocating to Berlin.
Birgit gained widespread recognition on European television with her lead role as Rabe (Raven) in the action-comedy Wilde Engel (2002). The film won the Taurus Stunt Award in 2003. She received a Shooting Star nomination for the Austrian TV Award Romy, and the TV series 3 Wild Angels (2003) was distributed globally by Sony Pictures.
Expanding her dance expertise, Birgit studied Kathak, a classical North Indian dance form. She founded the production company Leyendas (Spanish for "legends") and began writing screenplays. Her first short film, Adieu Bonjour (2008), was co-funded by Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg. Her debut feature film, Freak City (2020), was developed with a scholarship from the Wim Wenders Filmstiftung.
In recent years, Birgit Stauber has acted in and directed several award-winning productions. From 2018 to 2022, she served on the board of Pro Quota Film Germany, advocating for gender equality and diversity in the German film industry. She is a member of Equity UK (the UK actors' guild), the European Film Academy, and the BVR (the German directors' guild).
