Stuart Urban, a two-time BAFTA winner and 2017 nominee for The Secret, is a writer, director, and producer.
At just thirteen, he became the youngest director ever to screen at Cannes with his short film "The Virus Of War" (1972). His other notable work as writer/director includes An Ungentlemanly Act, a BBC tragicomedy about the Falklands War starring Ian Richardson and Bob Peck, which earned him the British Academy Award for Best Single Drama in 1993. This film also won Indie awards for Best Independent Production and British Drama, as well as accolades for script and direction at the Chicago and New York Film Festivals. His latest directorial achievement was on Our Friends in the North, a highly acclaimed BBC drama that earned him his second BAFTA Award as director. The series also received the Royal Television Society's Best Drama Serial award. In 1995, he wrote Deadly Voyage, a $6 million thriller for the BBC and HBO about a mass murder of stowaways in the Atlantic. The screenplay won critical praise and the Silver Nymph for best screenwriting at the 1997 Monte Carlo TV Festival.
In 1997, Stuart wrote, produced, and directed the cult comedy Preaching to the Perverted, which The Guardian recently named one of the 10 best kinky films ever made. In 2001, he wrote, produced, and directed Revelation, a mystical thriller starring Terence Stamp and Udo Kier, centered on the search for a relic that symbolizes the merging of science and religion. In 2007, he completed the feature documentary Tovarisch, I Am Not Dead, about his father, after 14 years in production. The film won awards and nominations at various festivals and was released theatrically in the UK. His 2013 feature, May I Kill You?, a London-based black comedy thriller featuring Kevin Bishop, Frances Barber, Jack Doolan, and Rosemary Leach, also saw theatrical release in the UK and internationally.
Stuart wrote and executive-produced The Secret, a fact-based ITV miniseries starring James Nesbitt, Genevieve O'Reilly, and Jason Watkins, which received numerous awards, nominations, top ratings, and critical acclaim. The series was sold to over 100 countries.
