Biographie
John Murphy is a Canadian-Irish actor, director, writer, composer, and producer active in film, TV, and theatre.
On television, John has held series regular roles on Sabrina and Away, with guest appearances on Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Loudermilk, and The Good Doctor. Notable projects include co-starring alongside Bradley Whitford in the limited series Valley of the Boom, and guest starring with Uzo Aduba and Matthew Broderick in the limited series Painkiller.
He co-wrote, co-produced, and directed the mockumentary Forgotten Masters, which explores the greatest guitars you've never heard of. The film has received two Leo Award nominations for Best Web Series and multiple nominations for Best Writing, Music, Actor, Editing, Direction, and Web Series at various film festivals. John directed, co-wrote, and co-produced two short films: The Legend of Wilson Spalding and The Box, the latter winning the Audience Choice Award at the Reelfast 48 Hour Film Fest. He also directed and produced the music video for "Still Fighting" by China Repair.
In theatre, John has performed in over one hundred plays, directed twenty-eight productions, and written three plays. He has been heavily involved with Bard on the Beach, Vancouver's renowned Shakespeare festival, where he portrayed iconic characters such as Benedick, Petruchio, and Jaques, as well as adapting and directing Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing. He has received four Jessie Award nominations for acting, with additional nominations for directing and composing, and won a Jessie Award for Best New Play for True Story. His one-man show, The Heretic, which he also starred in, toured across Canada and featured at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, earning praise as "a tour de force" from The Scotsman.
John has performed in hundreds of live comedy shows, including sketch, stand-up, and improv, and is a co-founder of the influential Vancouver sketch comedy group Gut-Wrench.
