Biographie
Val "Macky" Derpo, a Mowelfund alumnus and one of the youngest members of the Philippine Motion Picture Directors Association (formerly Kapisanan ng mga Direktor ng Pelikulang Pilipino - PMPDA/KDPP), is a 24-year-old filmmaker with a vision to produce both quality films and innovative ideas. After exploring photography, theater, writing, the call center industry, and completing college, Macky found his true calling behind the camera.
He began his filmmaking journey studying under esteemed directors such as Boy Vinarao, Surf Reyes, Jun Pereira, Andy Andico, and William Mayo. These mentors recognized Macky's unique talent for crafting chilling storytelling and concepts, impressively creating a sense of dread even within the limited scope of brief class discussions.
Inspired by Japanese filmmakers like Takashi Shimizu, Takashi Miike, and Akira Kurosawa, as well as drawing from folklore, myths, and history, Macky aims to produce films that break new ground in traditional Filipino cinema.
Though he sometimes doubted his experience, Macky embraced risk-taking, believing every journey must start somewhere. Without hesitation, he began shooting films. Young and ambitious, he continually strives for success and envisions delivering the highest forms of entertainment. His passion for the silver screen, entertainment, and the arts fueled the creation of his first full-length feature film, "Ika-Sampu."
Looking ahead, Macky plans to produce more films, with his next project exploring a completely different genre from his debut, while also completing his bachelor's degree in Mass Communications.
