Biographie
Nadia Fares is an acclaimed Egyptian-Swiss director, writer, and producer. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Her debut feature film, "Honey and Ashes," garnered numerous international awards and widespread critical praise for its pioneering portrayal of contemporary Arab women. Variety described it as "edgy and intelligent."
Beyond scripted projects, Nadia also creates documentaries to lend depth and authenticity to her fictional work. She has explored risky subjects, including undercover interviews with hitmen in Europe and a jihadist prisoner in Africa.
Her mentor at NYU, the renowned Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski (known for The Ten Commandments, Red, Blue, White), emphasized that great directors tell stories uniquely yet revolve around common themes. Nadia’s work is united by the "fish out of water" motif, reflecting her upbringing between an Egyptian father and Swiss mother and her navigation of diverse cultures, identities, mindsets, and senses of humor. Fluent in English, French, German, and Arabic, her multicultural background deeply informs her storytelling and directorial style.
Believing that truth can often surpass fiction, Nadia strives to capture her characters’ authenticity when directing scripted work, revealing underlying subtext, complexity, and contradictions.
She divides her time between Los Angeles, Cairo, and Geneva, currently developing two feature films in the U.S. and an original series for international audiences.
