Biographie
Tom Boyd is one of the most widely heard oboists today, having performed on over 1,400 motion picture film scores.
A graduate of The Juilliard School, Boyd secured the Principal Oboe position with The Honolulu Symphony at just 21. After a decade of performing classical masterpieces by composers like Beethoven and Brahms—while surfing almost daily—he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the commercial studio scene. Within three weeks, he was playing principal oboe under John Williams on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Boyd taught music at the University of Hawaii for ten years and is now Professor of Oboe at Azusa Pacific University, mentoring many emerging musicians across the United States.
His extensive film credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, King Kong, the Jurassic Park and Lethal Weapon series, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away. More recently, his work can be heard on The Bucket List, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Rush Hour 3 (composed by Lalo Schifrin), The Green Hornet, Green Lantern, Water for Elephants, and the upcoming Big Miracle starring Drew Barrymore. Boyd is also well-versed in television performances, having appeared at major events like the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Latin Grammys, as well as multiple appearances on The Tonight Show, including performing with Neil Diamond’s orchestra. He has contributed to numerous albums by iconic artists such as Barbra Streisand and Natalie Cole. Currently, he is engaged in a recording project featuring John Denver songs alongside world-class singers including Plácido Domingo, with arrangements by Lee Holdridge. These highlights represent just a portion of the many rewarding experiences in his musical career.
