Joseph G. Davis was born on December 21, 1873, in Sunderland, Tyne-and-Wear, England, UK, into a theatrical family. His parents were Alfred Davis and Janet Davis (née Gunnis).
The SS New York departed Southampton on January 2, 1904, heading for New York, arriving on January 10, 1904. Among the passengers were Joseph G. Davis, age 30, an actor, and his wife Mary Isabel Davis, age 27, an actress.
He was also known as James G. Davis and J. Gunnis-Davis.
His wife, Mary Davis, had been married twice before. Previously known as Mary Denton-Cardew and Mary Andrews, her maiden name was Mary Isabel Michael.
They had one son, James Irving John Gunnis-Davis, born on June 7, 1906, in New York, who was later known as Jack G. Davis.
J. Gunnis-Davis passed away on March 23, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, USA, and was buried at Hollywood Memorial Cemetery in Los Angeles.
