Biographie
Like many young Portuguese cinephiles of his generation, Eduardo Geada immersed himself in the world of cinema by actively participating in the vibrant film club movement of the 1960s, an open and dynamic environment where he absorbed techniques, theories, and a rich perspective on film history.
From 1968 to 1976, he worked as a film critic for various Portuguese magazines and newspapers, including Seara Nova, Vértice, Vida Mundial, A Capital, República, and Expresso.
He created and hosted the radio program Moviola (1985/86) on Antena 1, which focused on film soundtracks.
In 1978, as a recipient of a Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship, he completed his specialization in Film Studies at the Slade School of Fine Art (University College London).
Geada earned a Master of Arts in Media and Communication from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University of Lisbon) in 1985 and obtained a PhD in Film and Media History in 1997.
He produced a well-known TV show on cinema and culture. From the late 1960s through the 1980s, Geada made significant contributions to film criticism by sharing his cinematic ideas widely and publishing several books.
Eduardo Geada taught at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in Lisbon (Theatre and Film School) from 1978 to 2004 and at the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social (Media and Communication College) from 2004 to 2010.
His debut film, Sofia e a Educação Sexual (1973), was among the last to be censored under the old regime and was only screened after the April 1974 Revolution.
One of his early television films was O Funeral do Patrão (1975), adapted from a play by Italian playwright Dario Fo.
His second feature film, A Santa Aliança (1977), written by Geada himself, possesses the pamphlet-like style common to several notable post-Revolution films and was selected for the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.
A more recent work, Passagem por Lisboa (1993), explores cinema's memory by revisiting Lisbon in the early 1940s, featuring notable figures such as Pola Negri, Leslie Howard, the Duke of Windsor, Primo de Rivera, and the fictional character Victor Laszlo from the film Casablanca.
