Biographie
Following the debut of Ten Horn's film The Deflowering of Eva van End, which premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, Variety named him one of 'Ten European Directors to Watch.'
Michiel ten Horn (born 1983) graduated in 2007 from HKU, the University of the Arts Utrecht, where he studied animation. Although he focused on live-action as a student, his animation background continued to influence his storytelling and stylistic choices.
Recently, Michiel directed the first Dutch Netflix Original Series, Ares. Released in January 2020, the series follows an Amsterdam student who joins a secret society dating back to the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age, facing difficult decisions as she strives to rise through its ranks.
Michiel's debut feature, The Deflowering of Eva van End, is a tragicomedy about the Van End family, who struggle to accept their imperfections after the arrival of an impossibly perfect German exchange student. The film was sold to 23 countries, including the USA, and earned three Golden Calf nominations for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Music. At the same festival, it won the Dutch Film Critics Award for Best Film of the Year and received the Film Poster Award.
His next film, The Peter Pan Man (Aanmodderfakker, 2014), initially produced as a TV movie, achieved remarkable success at the 2014 Netherlands Film Festival with six nominations, including Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Film. Following this success, the network decided to release it theatrically. The film ultimately won three Golden Calf Awards for Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay.
He is currently in preproduction for his next Dutch feature, Volgens de Overlevering, and is set to direct the German-Canadian feature film Nightlife.
