Biographie
Ghassan Kanafani was born in Acre, Palestine, during the time it was still Palestine. His father worked as a lawyer. Just before the Arab-Israeli War broke out, the family fled north. After residing in a Lebanese village near the border, hoping to return, they moved to Syria when the borders were closed due to the ceasefire agreement, eventually settling in Damascus. Young Ghassan had to help support his family of eight. By attending evening classes, he graduated in 1955.
He then relocated to Kuwait, following the path of many Palestinians before him. It was there that he began writing. His work depicted the lives of the Palestinian people—their hardships, exile, and later, their struggle. In 1961, he moved to Beirut, Lebanon, where he wrote his most famous novel, Men in the Sun. This novel was later adapted into a film titled al-Makhdu'un, or The Dupes.
Alongside his literary career, he was an activist for the Palestinian cause. He was a member of Dr. George Habash’s Arab Nationalist Movement (ANM) faction, which later evolved into the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1963, Kanafani became editor-in-chief of ANM’s newspaper, al-Muharrir. In 1967, ANM transformed into PFLP, adopting Marxism-Leninism as its official ideology. Two years later, Kanafani founded the new movement’s official newspaper, al-Hadaf (The Target), which continues to serve as the PFLP’s official publication.
On July 8, 1972, Kanafani entered his car to head to the al-Hadaf office. The car was rigged with a bomb, and he was killed instantly. His pen was as formidable a weapon against Israel as guerrilla rifles, if not more so. His legacy endures among Palestinians, and he is regarded as one of the greatest modern Arabic authors.
